Texas Ride for Missing Children

May 25th, 2018 – Austin, Texas

7:30 Registration – 8:00 Program – 8:30 Wheels Down

About the Ride for Missing Children

In 1995, a team of seven cyclists rode their bicycles from Utica, NY to Washington, DC to raise awareness of missing children and bring a message of safety to the people they met along the way. They arrived on the steps of the Capitol building on May 25th, National Missing Children’s Day. Two years later, inspired by that first ride, 43 cyclists rode their bicycles 100 miles from Albany, NY to Utica, NY with the same message of safety and awareness. Thus began the Rides for Missing Children.

The rides have grown steadily each year and now there are over 750 people participating in five separate rides in Utica, Rochester, Buffalo, Syracuse and Albany. This is our first year to launch the ride in Austin, Texas. The purpose of the rides is to:

– Honor all missing and exploited children.

– Raise funds to support prevention and education programs that help prevent child abduction and sexual exploitation.

There is a $25 registration fee and a $250 fundraising requirement to participate in the ride.

What is unique about this charity ride?

– Cyclists fundraise $250 to go to NCMECTX, which funds education prevention awareness
– The riders are escorted by local law enforcement, which means traffic is halted along the route. They ride together at a team pace averaging 14-18 mph.
– Riders visit schools along the route to greet children and offer information to raise awareness. The visits are electric as hundreds of children and adults cheer the riders as they enter the school grounds. This is the most gratifying aspect of the ride for most riders.
– During the ride NCMEC staff provide child safety education programs.

Riders

Being a Rider in The Ride For Missing Children is a challenging, rewarding and humbling experience. You will be a part of the biggest unified team in our area. There are other sporting/fundraising events but you are a solo entity. Here, you are a family.

You’ll be riding 2 x 2 as a unified team of bicyclists for a metric century (about 62 miles), escorted by the APD Police and local law enforcement of the jurisdictions along our route. The Ride stops at schools along the way for educational rest stops. We engage with the students bringing our message of child safety and abduction prevention and there is often a presentation at each school. For others, we Ride by while the students cheers us on. Before the Ride we reach out to schools that may or may not be along the Ride route with educational and awareness programs.

This event is not about a bike ride. The bicycles are the vehicles we use to make our journey and carry our message along. They provide a visible means to spread our message about the plight of missing and exploited children, and the importance of child safety education. Our bicycles help us to communicate with those whom we ride by and to educate those that we visit.

Get Involved

Participation in The Ride for Missing Children can take many forms and offer varying degrees of involvement either as a Rider, or as a Volunteer.

The Ride for Missing Children, and the mission of the NCMEC–TX office does not happen without the efforts of countless volunteers. Participation opportunities abound both on the day of The Ride, and throughout the year. Day-of-the-Ride volunteers provide logistical support to Riders all along the route, and in particular at school rest stops. While the Riders are the most visible part of the Ride, Volunteers are equal members of the team. The Ride for Missing Children does not happen without the support, assistance, and efforts of the Volunteers. Volunteers are needed not just on the day of The Ride but throughout the year helping with planning for the annual Ride event, and assisting in the mission of NCMEC-TX.
